Examination of DVT

General Appearance

Palpation

  • Temperature
  • Tenderness

Special Tests

  • Size difference in DVT

    • Measure 10 cm below the tibial tuberosity.
    • A difference of more than 3 cm is significant.
  • Homan’s sign (Note: This test is not usually done due to the risk of dislodging the clot)

    • Elicitation:
      • With the knee in the flexed position, forcibly dorsiflex the ankle.
    • Response:
      • Pain in the calf with this maneuver is consistent with deep venous thrombosis.

Respiratory Examination

Perform a comprehensive respiratory examination, including auscultation and assessment of respiratory rate and effort, to evaluate lung function and rule out pulmonary causes of symptoms.
